The Final Voyage - Atlantis STS-135

O.k. So this one is unusual and not one any of you can EVER do again! I'm also probably a little bit crazy for even attempting this one, but it was a BLAST - literally! :)

Thursday, July 7th, 2011 the boys and I started packing for our 24 hour adventure across the state. We packed a bag with a change of clothes, a bag of food/snacks, a bag of outdoor games, foldable chairs, umbrellas, sunscreen, bug spray, and a cooler full of drinks and sandwiches.

I woke up at approx. 3:00 a.m. Showered to wake up (drank a cup of coffee in the process). Checked to make sure we weren't missing anything. Half-woke the kids up and loaded them in the truck half asleep with blankets and pillows. (Oh, I forgot to mention, I added my nephew to the mix for today's adventure).

Yes, that's right, I am taking 3 boys to Titusville, Florida to see the last space shuttle launch! I loaded my three take-a-long cups of coffee in (yes, I said three) and off we went. With traffic, we finally made it there around 8:30 a.m. (at one point I went just under 4 miles in an hour and a half)

We parked for $20 and started walking. There were easily 2-3 million people gathered in this small area to witness such a historical event. We walked along Space View Park and looked at the Apollo Mission statues. The kids really liked this a lot!!! Then, I decided it was too crowded to hang around for another two hours. I talked the kids into heading back to the truck for snacks and football in the parking lot. With the amount of people there, we could see the blast off in the parking lot just the same as where the crowds were!

We spent time playing football, velcro ball, blowing bubbles, eating, you name it!!! The kids never got bored. Then it was time.....5....4....3...2...1... OH! I forgot to mention it was supposed to storm and the shuttle was in danger of being scrubbed. Well, the clouds started to break up and the sun came out. There was just one huge cloud left. Guess what? Blast off!!! AMAZING! MAGNIFICENT! LOUD! AMAZINGLY COOL! For a whole ten seconds. Then cloud coverage! I thought the kids were going to be disappointed, but they were so excited they couldn't stop talking about it. They kept saying, "We could see the whole shuttle. The fire was HUGE! The sound is soooo loud."

A moment they will never FORGET!

Also, the first shuttle launched when I was 7 years old. I explained this to my son and then explained that it was amazing that the last shuttle launched when he was 7. (He was not impressed)
